Apple’s CarPlay App

You're driving home from work and your iPhone starts ringing. So you scramble to dig it out of your pocket, slide the cursor over to answer it and then fumble it up to your ear, all while doing your best to keep at least one hand on the wheel and your eyes on traffic and the road in front of you.

We've all been there before, but not just with phone calls. With texts. With maps. With music.

But now, on certain Volvo vehicles, you can have all the best that your Apple iPhone has to offer without all the hassle involved in using it while you're on-the-go. How? By integrating your iPhone into the car's dashboard and infotainment display.

This innovation is called Apple CarPlay - and it's said to be the best iPhone experience on four wheels - just so long that you have a signal. All that you need to do is plug your iPhone into the car's dash and certain features of the iPhone will appear just a touch away on the car's LCD display screen. It sure does beat fumbling through your pocket to access your phone.

Here's a closer look at some of the features of the CarPlay feature:

  • Touch or talk: To access the calling, texting, mapping and music features that CarPlay permits, you can either touch the car's LCD display screen, just as you would on your iPhone, or use Siri to activate certain functions. Siri can be activated with a simple touch of a button on the steering wheel. As a bonus, CarPlay also works with the car's dials and knobs.

  • Apple Maps: One of the coolest features of CarPlay is the ability to access your Apple Maps app from your iPhone and have the turn-by-turn directions, traffic situation and projected travel time display directly on the LCD display screen on the car's dash.

  • Music: Aside from calling, texting and mapping, CarPlay can also access and play all the music that you have stored in your phones iTunes library. It will also play iTunes Radio if you'd like something different than your own playlists and artists.

  • Additional apps: It's also worth noting that CarPlay is able to work with a lot of other iPhone applications, aside from the ones we've already mentioned above. You can stream music from Spotify, iHeartRadio and Beats Music, check baseball scores and catch live game broadcasts on MLB At Bat and stream podcasts as well. Those are just a small sample size of the app functionality currently available - and Apple says that many more are expected to be added to the system in the future too.

Yes, CarPlay truly is the best way to use your iPhone on your four wheels - and it's available in select Volvo models. So instead of fumbling around for your iPhone when you need to place or answer a call, read or send a text or map the location and your route to your next destination, you can do it all from your dash with a quick swipe of your finger or a quick voice command to Siri. Infotainment just got a whole lot more convenient.
